Hi pal!
I’ve been writing a long guide about How To Keep a Fun Sketchbook for the past few months. Not actively, but every now and then I dive back into it. It’s still a while until I feel ready to publish it, but I found this bit from it that stands pretty well on its own.
Dealing with mistakes
Sometimes I’m unsatisfied with something that I put on the page. The other day I drew an old lady, but it turned out really bad and I wasn’t happy with it.
So I just kept drawing on it, adding more lines, seeing if I could fix it with shading or adjusting the shapes. It didn’t really work, the base was too bad. But I did give her huge floating head a neck, and a pair of broad shoulders. On one shoulder I put little pals and a few words, “room for everyone on my shoulder.”
Even though I found that drawing bad I turned it into something.
Mini Notes
📙 Book - The Outsider
Never read an entire Stephen King book before, but now I get why he’s so beloved. In this one a man is arrested for the gruesome murder of a child, the hitch is that there’s solid proof of him being in two far-apart locations at the same time. Don’t wanna say much more than that since it’s a crime story and I think it’s more fun to go in as blind as possible.
🐌 Tweet - Eiichiro Oda gets a snail phone
The live action One Piece series launched last week on Netflix!
If you have no idea what One Piece is, it’s a pirate adventure about a rubber boy who forms a crew of misfits. It flings back and forth from drama and comedy in a world where telephones are snails and there are rare fruits that grant the eater with super powers.
The general consensus seems to be that this is the first time anyone has ever managed to make a watchable live action adaption of a manga. My opinion is that it’s more than watchable, it’s frickin’ enjoyable. I’ve read the whole manga and watched a few hundred episodes of the anime and it’s quite refreshing to see them fix the main problems. Like Sanji isn’t a perverted, obnoxious flirt anymore - he’s just a normal human flirt and the women aren’t 90% boobs.
They’ve also changed some things around story wise, it helps make it surprising even for me even though I know this part of the story like the back of my hand.
I’m so glad to that they didn’t numb it down and make it a grittier or more realistic interpretation. My only serious critiques are “please desaturate the wigs a bit” and “there’s no enough snotty, ugly crying.”
🕹️ Game - Loop Hero
The premise of this game sounds pretty dull - your character automatically walks around a path and automatically battle enemies. But I wouldn’t tell you about this unless there was more to it.
What makes it interesting is that you have to strategically place cards/tiles with different properties to make the world around you appear. It’s very satisfying to see the world fill out as my little warrior grows stronger.
There’s also a surprisingly melancholic and lovable story about not losing hope in the face of despair.
Thank you for reading! Have a creative week.
