Hallå pals!
Jonas here with another issue of Indie Notebook to get some ideas out of my noggin, and to inspire you to do the same.
I’m in need of a proper break from publishing this newsletter, so this will be the last Indie Notebook issue of the year. I’ll be back to posting on the 12th of February.
The main reason for this break is I find it hard to keep up with everything. And even though publishing this newsletter is one of the smaller things I do in a week (and most enjoyable), it does get in the way of me working on my projects.
I will continue to publish Space Deer comics two times per week as usual though. You can subscribe to that over here, if you haven’t already.
Speaking of Space Deer. I needed to let out some creative steam that had built up, so I quickly edited an old model I had made and threw it into Unity.
Everything is mega placeholder here except for the 3D model. I’m prototyping the gameplay and preparing to make the art. This game is supposed to be real tiny and TIGHT (in scope).
Mini Notes
☕️ Daily Game - Real Bird Fake Bird
This is similar to Wordle, it’s a daily browser game where you have to guess the right meaning of some words. I’ve only been playing for about a week, but it’s a cozy 1-minute break.
📝 Newsletter - Story Notes
This is a newsletter/blog about storyboarding/telling and filmmaking, mostly focused on animation.
This recent post about some of Miyazaki’s views on word building gave me another way of differentiating between types of worlds. Definitely worth a read!
🎥 Game - Content Warning
I’ve been meaning to build myself a stationary PC all year. Because I’ve been doing all of my game dev on a 2020 Macbook (pre M1 and M2), which mostly works great but it can make it more difficult at times.
I got all the parts and built it myself, it took me an entire weekend to assemble everything and install Windows correctly. There was a dramaturgical curve to building this, at some point I was ready to surrender because I thought I had screwed up too bad or maybe some component had been faulty to begin with. But by the end of Sunday I had the computer running smoothly. I never did this before so it feels like a big accomplishment.
I’ve been playing a bunch of games from my backlog on Steam. But my highlight so far was to play Content Warning with my friends.
In this game you dive into the dark underground together to film creepy creatures and share your clips on SpookTube. It’s such a fresh idea and it’s so darn well made. I love preparing for an expedition and how much we have to communicate with each other because of the spatial-audio thing.
Panel of the week
(from Space Deer)
Thank you for reading Indie Notebook this year! Happy holidays! ❤️
See you again in February!
Sounds reasonable. And happy that we are still gonna be getting Space Deer!
Enjoy your break and merry Christmas, Jonas.
I think we do 1,000 hours of work for every publishable hour- I think you will have so much to write about by then :) This break can only be good for you.
Spacedeer err Space Goat is looking great! I hope it reaches/reached its audience.
Love being overworked sometimes, love taking breaks sometimes.
