Hallå pals!
Jonas here with another issue of Indie Notebook to get some ideas out of my noggin, and to inspire you to do the same.
The summertime chill continues for me. I’m mostly relaxing in an arm chair, but I’m also working on 100%-ing Mariokart Double Dash with my brother (only the mirror cup left now).
Yesterday I took a stroll in the forest, slashing some straws of grass and whacking pine cones with a stick, then I took a pause and drew a bit in my sketchbook. I like the smell of pine forest.
Otherwise I’ve been drawing a few Space Deer strips and doodled. Mostly taking it easy this month though.
Here’s a doodle of Space Deer meeting Snoopy.
Space Deer’s current design was very inspired by Snoopy. I knew I would eventually end up drawing them side by side. I put if off because I found it would be a waste to not draw it as a neat n’ clean illustration. Instead I sketched it quickly and slapped some color on it. Good enough I think! Not everything has to be drawn to perfection.
Mini Notes
🍔 Cartoon series - Bigtop Burger
It’s been bothering me that so much of what I watch online, and especially on Youtube is just blabbering about stuff. I’ve been missing stories through there and luckily I found this show about a foodtruck run by clowns. There are two “seasons,” they are more like episodes. Weird and fun. Each season is 20 minutes.
Glad to discover that something like this can and does exist. I would love to animate some shorts some day too.
📝 Sketches - Early One Piece character designs
A lot of old sketches from Eiichiro Oda have surfaced recently. This one in particular is quite amazing for me to see. Oda is such a confident character designer, it’s cool to see his early, wonkier attempts at finding the current designs of the main cast in One Piece.
Sometimes you know when you’ve found a character design right away, sometimes you have to keep refining and searching for a long time to nail it. This is such an obvious and boring “pirate boy” design.
📻 Radio Interview about Surmount
My aunt works at the radio station in my home region. They had a four minute time slot to fill so they invited me to talk about my game Surmount. Her colleague interviewed me. I was pretty nervous but he was a good interviewer and warmed me up before we got on air (it was live). I was so close to not doing it, now I’m glad I did though.
I would share it here but it’s in Swedish and hard to find!
✏️ Doodle - The Mall Wizard
I saw lots of people were drawing this little wizard who invaded a mall recently. I wanted to draw him too.
