Hallå my pals!
Jonas here with another issue of Indie Notebook to get some ideas out of my noggin, and to inspire you to do the same.
Today won’t be a full issue, I’ve been assembling the mini sketchpad that I talked about last week into a PDF all day. I scanned most of the pages, cropped them, color adjusted them and bla bla. Everything is multiplied by 80, so every step takes quite a while.
I thought I would be able to power through it quickly to have it ready for todays issue, but that just won’t happen. I’ll definitely be done with it for next week though!
Today will be a shorty!
Mini Notes
❌ Twitter - Things that seem obvious to the game designer
Very relatable and sums up pretty well what it’s like to get your game playtested.
📝 Essay - An invitation to a secret society
This writer argues that anyone can and should do science,
“turn up the weirdness. More wild hypotheses! More risky research! The useless ideas will die from disuse, but the useful ideas will live on.”
I love writing like this that smash some walls and give permission to do whacky stuff. You don’t need a PHD to make a discovery, it’s all out there, waiting for anyone who is curious enough.
🗡️ Game - Elden Ring
I tried Dark Souls 3 and got really stuck and demotivated by it, it felt too much like a long corridor that I had to punish myself to get through. I’ve just played 3 hours of Elden Ring so far but it seems promising, definitely more of an adventure feeling to it than DS3. I doubt it will fit into my definition of adventure games, it might be great anyway though.
Halloween has really gotten a grip on me this year, I think that’s part of why I was so attracted to try this.
👻 Podcast - The Magnus Archives
Speaking of horror. I’ve been really into this podcast lately. It’s a bit X-Files inspired with each episode going into a different paranormal event. You can listen to most episodes without context of the previous one, but if you listen from the beginning it builds up a greater story.
Most podcasts I listen to are non-fiction, so this is a welcome change.
❓ Question time
Do you have any horror recommendations?
Thank you for reading Indie Notebook! Next week I’ll be sharing the fully assembled PDF with all those sketches! Keep an eye out for that!
Take care and have a creative week.
Man, the next post is gonna be epic! You’re spoiling us :P
There’s a lot of crap horror movies but there are also some serious gems.
Maybe you’ll like The Descent; it’s cool and it has a bit of an adventure element as well, which might resonate with you.
I personally love The Witch - it is dark(!) and sophisticated - I’ll watch anything by Robert Eggers after that (The Lighthouse is also cool).
