That's a beautiful 3D model. Mount Om has such a distinct look.
Besides the inspirations you mentioned, I've also wondered if there is perhaps a bit of Sludge Life in there. From the phone games, to the graffiti and breaking into the room atop of New Tully. Then again, maybe it's just because I know you like that game. hehe
Actually I'm not sure about Sludge Life... I can't remember if I thought of it conciously as I was working on the game but that game is on my mind sometimes for no reason. So it probably did come in a bit subconsciously.
Which reminds me that I did think about Mario Sunshine when making those secret parts and some details in Tully.
I probably projected that onto the game (and your intentions) then.
What inspired you to have "spa" as an option in the hotel, only to have the receptionist tell you: "No. We don't have a spa. I don't know why the website says that." ? :D
I wanted to make the Hotel seem like a badly managed place with and with little flaws that make it seem oddly specific, it makes it feel a little more real for some reason. And something about it is also just feels kinda like being a game dev and answering difficult questions sometimes hehe
You're right that it makes it feel like kind of a genuine place. And yeah, I can imagine the difficult questions you'd get as a developer.
It also really humanizes the receptionist. It reminds me of having to deal with customers. I'm sure he's had to explain that to hotel guests a million times before!
I do usually "pick a mountain and climb it;" but at the same time it's not like I ever maxed in RuneScape. I don't usually go for achievements unless a game is super fun; I've only done it with 2 games. I really enjoyed going for the Speedlunky and Low Scorer achievements (low scorer must've taken 60-150 hours because of how I rewired my brain to not pick up gold and played a lot between resting (I believe resting is where my brain changes most and it's proportionally little time here)). I made, shared, and played custom levels through the Frozlunky mod (https://spelunky.fyi/mods/hd/?mod_type=6&rated=&q=&order_by=-listed_at). I also consumed YouTube content like this https://youtu.be/QtY8pGJ-qfs And I loved the graphics and music and gameplay. A good soundtrack on repeat for hours is hypnotic; just see all the Pokemon games (which admittedly I have little exposure to).
I think I tried the low scorer achievement at some point in the first Spelunky, I picked something up right away and was like "nope." It's a very hard rewire!
Modding and level designing for Spelunky must be a lot of fun! Another reason I wish I had a PC.
Floppy Arms Challenge sounds like fun too. Is there any challenge you would recommend as a first challenge to attempt in Spelunky 2?
Hah, fun to read you had attempted it. It was lots of fun; many creative ways to use simple mechanics. I wish I hadn't lost my big WIP level project that trumped my others in creativity...
Hm, I only have 15 hours in Spelunky 2 and don't know too much about it :) Probably the best move is to pick any mountain (challenge) you like the idea of and climb it (beat it).
Wow! 💚
Let's go Surmount!

Spelunky! Nice! I played that for about 500 hours ;)
That's a lot! I don't think I have quit that many hours in it tho ahah
Are you a completionist?
